The people! I’m truly grateful to be working with such phenomenal colleagues and exceptional students. Our distributed model never ceases to amaze me in its superior success.

Coaching! I coached in high school softball for 15-years and recognized that everyone had a place “in the lineup.” Each person is an individual and each comes to us from their own unique place. We have the challenge/opportunity of working with every student from that place to help them be successful.

Most Interesting Work Experience

I once had a student call me to discuss a research/grant proposal (something about jet engines). Clearly, I didn’t know a thing about that, and I told the student so- but he kept right on talking. I asked him to tell me what he’d found in his literature review and explain (slowly) where he wanted to go. Two hours later, he said, “You did it, Dr. G! You discovered the research question!” I said, “No my friend, you did. I just helped you get there.” Today that student’s company is in the ERAU MicaPlex.

 Great colleagues!

Favorite Teaching Strategy

The subject matter I’m teaching is often unfamiliar and often outside their comfort zone. But since the content is related to human behavior, inevitably there comes a point in every class where we cover a topic that sparks their interest. Usually, it’s unexpected on their part. Even in an online environment, I can sense that ‘lightbulb moment’ where their curiosity is ignited and they are motivated to learn more. Their enthusiasm, in turn, motivates me as an instructor to feed their curiosity – and that is what education is all about!

Teaching at various education centers throughout Europe. Working for ERAU under our military contract in Europe has given me the opportunity to interact with students and colleagues from all over the globe, many of whom are US service members and their families. It’s been the best of both worlds. I’ve been able to connect with them about our shared American heritage and learn about their diverse backgrounds and experiences, all with the backdrop of various European countries and cultures. Being a part of the larger military family while overseas has strengthened my connection to people I may otherwise never have met. It’s enriched my life, as I hope it has theirs.

Favorite Teaching Strategy

Engaged learning through multiple touchpoints of each content area. One memorable student is one I had in my MGMT 672 Strategy graduate course, he asked: what is strategy? I answered, it is a puzzle waiting to be solved, but you must first plan in order to implement it. He then came back with the question: can I apply this course content to me and my life, instead of the assignment guidelines. I stated NO and YES: no you can not rewrite my assignments and still need to follow the instructions: but yes you can apply it to you and your industry. Strategy is relevant to every facet of life. Fortune 500s, mom and pop small businesses, nonprofit lemonade stands, and yes even your grocery shopping list. The reason this conversation stood out to me was twofold: 1) I was encouraged that the student was willing to question and was candid enough to post the question, and 2) that my teaching philosophy and pedagogy style is applied and I was able to translate that through multiple modalities.
