How do I use the Grades tool in Canvas?
Use the Gradebook to easily view and enter grades for students. Grades for each assignment can be viewed as points, percentage, complete or incomplete, GPA scale, or letter grade.
Only graded assignments, graded discussions, graded quizzes, and graded surveys that have been published display in the Gradebook. Not Graded assignments are not included.
The default view in the Gradebook is to view all students at a time, but you can also view students individually in the Gradebook Individual View. However, Individual View currently does not support all settings and options from the Gradebook.
To learn more, read the Grades section of the Canvas Instructor Guide. Topics include:
- Arrange columns in the Gradebook
- Recording notes
- Select a grade policy
- Message students
- Enter and edit grades
- Curve grades
- Set a default grade
- Leave comments
- Late/Missing Policy
- Late policy percentages should always match your syllabus and instructor policies.
- Late policy percentages should be adjusted BEFORE term start only. Do not make any changes to the Late Policy in Canvas during the term. Changing percentages during the term may cause issues with grade calculations.
- This Adjust Late Policy feature is optional. Grades for late assignments can still be calculated manually.
The Status option allows the default colors in the Gradebook to be customized. Each color is associated with a Gradebook status: late, missing, resubmitted, dropped, or excused. Colors can be adjusted by selecting a default color or using a supported HEX code.
